Education
is a vital component which will be integrated throughout,
applying creative and enjoyable ways for visitors to learn
about horticultural techniques and the relationship between
plants and people.
The
next generation must be inspired to care for their environment.
The Calyx will be fun and a source of wonderment for all
ages. A variety of themed play areas will introduce children
to the plant kingdom, a world more fantastic than anything
they could ever see on television. An educational adventure
play area will excite their sense of adventure.
With
assistance from the Scottish Executive, Scotland's Garden
Trust are developing an education strategy which will deliver
a life-long learning resource in horticulture at both professional
and amateur levels. This will be open to all ages and abilities,
both at Cherrybank and remotely electronically, and tailored
specifically to meet the needs of tertiary and further education.
Access to the garden through e-technology and e-learning
will be central to the development of the identified audience
base. In addition to this, SGT will investigate the potential
to provide training for teachers to meet curriculum requirements
at both primary and secondary school levels.
The
Calyx will become a catalyst for the provision of education
for the community and gardening public, addressing all levels
of experience by means of hands-on practical work, lectures,
short courses, and by access electronically. As a key objective,
Scotland's Garden Trust will continue to develop this vital
function within The Calyx.
"Remember that gardeners
generally want to share knowledge and hear your comments,
so don't be shy about starting a conversation. Like artists,
most gardeners want to know how their creation communicates
with the viewer. See if you can discover the spirit and
vision behind the garden and reflect on what is moved within
you."
